Safety Tips Guide

Your safety is our top priority at Zelulu. While thousands of successful, hassle-free trades happen on our platform every day, buying and selling online requires smart precautions.
Please read these essential safety guidelines before arranging a transaction, meeting a prospective buyer or seller, or completing a deal.

1. Golden Rules for Safe Trading

🚨 The #1 Rule on Zelulu

Never send money in advance!

Do not pay deposits, delivery fees, or full payments online before you have physically met the seller, inspected the item in person, and verified that everything matches the ad description.

  • Trade Locally: Meet in person to inspect the item before paying.
  • Inspect First, Pay Second: Thoroughly test electronics, check vehicle paperwork, or try on clothing prior to handing over cash or making a digital payment.
  • Trust Your Instincts: If an offer seems too good to be true (e.g., a brand-new flagship phone listed at 80% below market value), it is almost certainly a scam. Walk away.

2. Safety Guidelines for Buyers

A. Meeting the Seller

  • Choose a Safe, Public Location: Always arrange meetups in busy, well-lit public places during daylight hours. Ideal locations include shopping malls, bank lobbies, coffee shops, or public transit stations.
  • Avoid Private / Remote Locations: Never meet a seller in isolated areas, secluded alleys, or inside a private home unless necessary (e.g., picking up heavy furniture). If a home visit is required, always bring a friend or family member with you.
  • Inform Someone: Tell a friend or relative where you are going, who you are meeting, and share your live location on your phone.

B. Inspecting the Item

  • Electronics & Gadgets: Turn on phones, laptops, and tablets. Test the Wi-Fi connectivity, cameras, charging ports, speakers, and verify that activation locks (e.g., iCloud, Google Account, carrier locks) have been completely removed.
  • Vehicles: Inspect the vehicle in daylight. Test the engine, brakes, and electrical systems. Request to see original registration documents, service logs, and identity cards to confirm ownership before making any transfer.
  • Brand Authenticity: When buying designer goods, high-end watches, or luxury items, verify serial numbers, receipts, and proof of purchase to avoid buying counterfeit items.

C. Safe Payment Methods

  • • Pay only after inspecting and taking physical possession of the item.
  • • Use traceable local mobile money or direct bank transfers at the moment of exchange, or carry exact cash in a secure pocket.
  • • Do not fall for sellers claiming they need a "refundable booking fee" or "courier fee" to hold the item for you.

3. Safety Guidelines for Sellers

A. Meeting Prospective Buyers

  • Public Meetups: Just like buyers, sellers should meet interested parties in populated, well-monitored public spaces.
  • High-Value Items: For expensive items (e.g., luxury jewelry, high-end laptops, or vehicles), conduct the exchange inside a bank branch or near a local police station.
  • Do Not Hand Over the Item Early: Keep the item in your possession until you have verified receipt of full payment.

B. Verifying Payments Securely

  • Beware of Fake Payment Receipts: Scammers often send forged SMS notifications, fake bank confirmation emails, or photoshopped payment screenshots.
  • Verify on Your Own Device: Always check your own banking app, mobile money balance, or cash in hand directly before letting the buyer leave with your item.
  • No Cheques or Reversible Transfers: Avoid accepting personal checks, cashier's checks, or unverified wire transfers that can bounce or be reversed after the buyer departs.

4. Red Flags & Common Scam Tactics to Avoid

Be alert if a trading partner exhibits any of the following suspicious behaviors:

Scam Red Flag

What It Means

What You Should Do

Upfront Fee Requests

Seller demands a "commitment fee," "shipping deposit," or "customs clearing charge."

Refuse immediately. Real sellers let you inspect items in person.

Overpayment Claims

Buyer claims they mistakenly transferred extra money and asks you to refund the difference.

Check your actual account balance. Do not send money back for unverified transactions.

Refusal to Meet in Person

Seller refuses in-person meetups, claiming they are abroad, military personnel on deployment, or stuck in another city.

Stop communication. Only trade with local sellers you can meet face-to-face.

Off-Platform Communication

A user pressures you to switch chat to unverified links, suspicious web forms, or third-party phishing sites.

Keep all messaging within Zelulu's built-in chat system to preserve conversation records.

Fake Job / Employment Fees

An employer on Zelulu asks job seekers for an "interview registration fee" or "medical checkup fee."

Legitimate employers never charge job applicants fees to apply or interview. Report the listing.

5. How to Report Fraud or Suspicious Behavior

If you suspect a user is attempting a scam, offering illegal goods, or harassing you:

  1. In-App Reporting: Go to the listing page or user profile and tap the "Report Ad" or "Report User" button.
  2. Select the Reason: Choose Fraud/Scam, Fake Item, Misleading Info, or Suspicious Behavior.
  3. Block the User: Use Zelulu’s built-in chat settings to block the user from messaging you further.
  4. Law Enforcement: If you have been the victim of a financial theft or physical robbery, immediately file a report with your local police department and provide them with the chat logs, user details, and phone numbers.
